Humans by nature are very lazy and driven by repeat behavior. I’ve never forgotten the old piano teacher I had, with her black cats and one leg 5 inches longer than the other, telling me that if you learn a song perfectly on the piano, eventually you’d get a muscle memory and that makes it easier for one to play music from memory because your fingers remember which keys go next. To this day, I can remember a few songs, but I am sadly out of practice, mostly from renting/owning homes that have no room for the piano.

Lately, I’ve decided to set about my life, breaking one bad habit at a time. The first to go was my coffee addiction. Summer was good, and work was even better for kicking this habit. Its too hot to have a hot drink. I’ve gone from drinking 4 cups a day to maybe 2 a week tops. The added bonus is I now sleep much better at nights.

I’ve kicked chewing my nails. Nobody likes grotty fingernails pointing at figures on reports etc. It just looks so much more professional to have tidy nails with a simple clear gloss on them.

An ongoing project is weight loss, but I’m starting with cleaning up my diet. Gone are the days of cans of V, chocolate bars, chips etc in the lunch box. Today its all about V8 vegetable juice, yogurt, cereal, fruit, low fat foods, stuff that isn’t “energy dense” and not leaving anything I can snack on around the house. I’ll admit if there’s a bag of pineapple lumps in the fridge, they might not last until nightfall, but by not purchasing them in the first place, that has got to be a good start!

What am I going to focus on next – getting to bed earlier! A rested self means I won’t start the day tired and go downhill. Before it was a matter of catching the late shows on television, now I use my MySky and record the shows and watch them when it suits me. So if you see me online after 9.30pm, tell me to go to bed. Thanks.

At the end of the day, I’ve even got into the habit of washing all my make up off my face. This has the downside of chewing through the Matis skincare a lot faster, but if it’s in the name of better skin, so be it.

So, I am a work in progress and by breaking each habit one at a time, I’m setting myself up to be the best that I can be without the stench of failure following me around.
