here we go again!

I got the idea today for my next kick ass time lapse photography project. You may remember, I did one a while ago of the signwriting of a hardside trailer body that we had here at work. I’ve been trying to find something not signwriting related that I can have a crack at and then today, I had that eureka moment!

Tomorrow is the Six Hour Endurance race at Pukekohe. It starts at 2pm in the afternoon and runs until 8pm at night. That is two hours in darkness. When I’m at the race track, I work from the Race Control booth at the top of the members stand. It gives me a view of pretty much the entire race track bar part of the front straight because someone rudely stuck a bridge there and through the dip.

So tomorrow, while working in race control, I will set up my camera, Nikon D200, on a tripod with my super-wide lens (Tokina 12-24 f/4) that I acquired while in the states earlier this year and fire off an exposure every 15-20 seconds. I will need to make a few adjustments etc as the shoot continues, but I expect these to be minor adjustments to simple things like ISO as it gets darker.

So my goal is tomorrow afternoon set up the camera during the lunch break on a tripod on the top level of the members grandstand, set the aperture to f11 or similar, take a shutter speed reading, switch to manual everything and just check my settings every hour or so throughout the evening until the end.

With the 1200-1440 exposures expected, I won’t be shooting in RAW, but JPG, probably medium quality as well. That way I can get 1200 exposures to one 4GB compact flash card. I will be using the battery grip as I can swap batteries out throughout the evening just in case because that was my achilles heel last time I did one of these babies.

Suffice to say, this time around, I’m better equipped/prepared and I think I know what I’m going.

While the time lapse is clicking away, I’m going to spend about 30 minutes taking a handful of long exposure shots on another camera and some bracketed shots at dusk to use for HDR as I’ve never really tried my hand at that either.

But in the words of a mentor, if HDR is turning up at camera club level, its already overused.

Of course, I will share the finished work right here and on twitter/facebook/youtube etc :)

Any photography projects you have in mind?

honours

Another camera club night has been and gone and again, I did very well! I walked away with First Place (with Honours as only honours images are eligible for podium) overall in the intermediate grade! YAY!

Here is the winning entry:

Afternoons in Balboa

A stunning image right? I actually went to the effort of getting this printed and framed and gave it to my Mum for Mothers Day. So she has the winner hanging on her office wall right now.

When I say to people I walked around the corner in Plaza di Panama, Balboa Park, San Diego, saw this and went wow, they say it sounds so cliché but the truth is the whole architecture of the Plaza was wow. We don’t have anything like this in New Zealand. The place is visually stunning and this photo is just one walkway of many, a stolen moment from the afternoon we were there.

Late last night while researching some photoshop techniques, I came across LPSNZ honours and in my usual easily distracted fashion, I decided to look into what is required. Its tough. A set of 10 images equally as strong as the other. I could do this. I could make this a goal to get LPSNZ honours next year if I really put some effort in and find the right mentor to help me.

This got me thinking and a few friends are giving me the shove in the correct direction, that I should start kicking things up a gear, and for me, a view to honours. They’re keen to commission me for a series of photographs of landscapes and architectural photographs as well.

So there it is, a goal – LPSNZ honours. Try until I get them. And finally, some photography work that might actually pay (even if it is only peanuts and wine)

celebrating life’s little successes

Its been a while since my last actual post that wasn’t gloating about my vacation. And seeing as its been so long, a few things have changed and its probably time for an update.

Race Control

Standby! I certainly feel like part of the team now after a lot of hard work, and while I still have this little negative voice in my head saying it could all be snatched away from me, I love what I do, I love the people that I get to work with and the new friends I’ve made in that department.

This weekend coming is my first time in Race Control for the ITM 400 V8 Supercars in Hamilton. To say I’m nervous is a bit of an understatement. I’m extremely nervous, but I thrive on the challenge, so I’m sure I will be fine. I’m used to talking to 10 flag points and this weekend coming, I will be communicating with 23 flag points. Wow. This. Is. Huge.

Photography

Last night was camera club night. It has been a bit of a spit-spat year so far as Club night started in February and then I missed March because I was overseas, so it was nice to go back and see everyone and catch up on any and all gossip. I did really well. Surprisingly well actually.

Fan Pan Tone

This one here got Highly Commended. The guest judge knocked it back for too much colour and brightness but she loves the idea behind it.  And then this one:

Wet Feet

Honours and a 2nd Place overall for Intermediate Grade. Wohoo! And then, after that success, I had some more. We got our summer projects back with the Judges comments and for a summer project that almost didn’t happen because of a 30th birthday and a crazy motorsport season came in 2nd overall in the Intermediate grade as well. I’m so stoked. I’m consistently second so far this club year. I’m really looking forward to next month now.

I’ve also found a new subject for a timelapse project, so will hopefully look at doing something about that in the not too distant future as well, and another accompanying post on how I did that. I’m also looking to make an AV presentation for Camera Club using some of the photos from my trip around California/Nevada/Arizona. Might have to take a workshop on that so that I can learn how to make the video etc for Camera Club.

Education

I’m putting this on hold for a while. I keep flip-flopping as to what I want to do. The more I think about it, the more I’d like to be able to have more time up my sleeve for photography and motorsport, because those are the things I really enjoy the most. The more I think about it the more I get a bit upset that I’ve come this far, it would be a shame to stop the fun now. Work-Fun balance. And I’m wanting to travel some more.

Travel

So, as you could probably tell from the Posterous Category here, we had an amazing time travelling around California/Nevada/Arizona and I got some amazing photos. We’re itching to go back. We said it was our trip of a lifetime. It might just be the trip of our early 30s! LOL!

Diet

I’m pleased to announce that I’ve shaken off 5kg since the start of this year. Probably from carrying around a backpack in Vegas full of Camera Equipment and walking everywhere, but I’ve kept it off and I’m feeling better for it. I’m looking forward to the next 5kg going – then I’d be at 10%. I should celebrate hitting that 10%, but I don’t know. I might think about it in 4kgs time :D I’ve been using Myfitnesspal.com app and website to count my calories and I bought some Sketchers Shape Ups while in California as well and time permitting I’ve been going out walking with those.

So I guess thats all from me for now. I might have something to add in a few days time. Like a summary of how I survived in the Race Control office at the Hamilton V8 Supercars.

the cake isn’t a lie

It has been a while since my last blog post. Naughty me. But I could be forgiven as I’ve been such a busy beaver that this spot has kind of been pushed to one side while I keep myself plodding along trying not to fall asleep behind the wheel so to speak.

The last two weekends, I’ve been busy working my butt off in Race Control for the NZ Festival of Motor Racing Celebrating Chris Amon. It was seriously the hardest weekends I’ve ever had, and the most fun too. Sure, there is always someone who has the milkshake that brings all the drama to the yard, and I guess thats part and parcel of teenagers. I remember once upon a time, I was one. I still think I am one.

But yesterday, I cracked the big three oh. And the planet didn’t stop turning. A few cards had ‘welcome to the club’ written in them, and I’m now wondering – where are the clubrooms and does it have a cash bar? But seriously, we had the most amazing, relaxed celebration last night with friends and family here at our place. The food was awesome and I still have some salads left and some cake too. Om nom nom. The cake is not a lie!

And suffice to say, I got spoiled. I have a gorgeous canvas print, ceramic tile set, necklace, vouchers, hot dog machine just to name a few, but the real gift was that two friends who hadn’t spoken in years, reconciled at my party. Oh the warm fuzzies!

My darling husband gave me two presents, one was a Nikkor 50mm f1.8D lens and the other is a Lens Baby Muse with Plastic Optic. I got my presents early. He had good reason to do that. If I had got my presents on my actual birthday, the house would not have been cleaned and the foodage would have gone unpurchased. So all my guests can be thankful for that I suppose.

And so now, the party is over, the dishes mostly washed, the cake vacuumed up off the carpet and not a hangover was to be had. I’ve had a wee play with my Lens Baby and got a few shots in. More practice is required, but for now, I can allow myself to focus on the final arrangements for our LA trip in 26 days, 22 hours and also focus on the upcoming ITM 400 in Hamilton where I will well and truely be feeling out of my depth, but loving the rush from the pressure I’m sure.

And looking back at my 20s, it was a real mixed bag and I know, this next 10 years, my 30s, are going to be awesome!
